Dame Shirley Bassey Announced as Patron of the Black Welsh Music Awards

We are proud and honoured to announce that the legendary Dame Shirley Bassey CH DBE has officially joined the Black Welsh Music Awards (BWMA) as Patron. Born in Cardiff and celebrated across the world, Dame Shirley’s incredible voice and career have become symbols of excellence, resilience, and cultural pride.

Dame Shirley’s influence spans over seven decades, breaking numerous barriers as the first Welsh female person of colour to top the UK charts, the first UK artist to feature on the cover of Ebony Magazine (1963), and the first recipient of the Best Female Artist award at the Brit Awards. She remains the only artist to have recorded three James Bond title tracks. Even her very first single, Burn My Candle, left an indelible mark, despite facing censorship at the time.

Reflecting on her journey, Dame Shirley shared:

“As a little girl, the youngest of seven, living in Splott, Tiger Bay, I could never have dreamed that travelling the world through music would become my life. Inspired by Jazz icons like Lena Horne and Ella Fitzgerald, I pursued every opportunity to sing – from local theatres to professional contracts, with no looking back.”

“Throughout my career, I broke through many barriers, and it is truly humbling to know that my music and story have inspired young talent. I am honoured to support the Black Welsh Music Awards in celebrating the diverse and emerging creative talents from Wales.”

Her support of BWMA strengthens our mission to amplify the voices of Black artists in Wales and to ensure that their extraordinary contributions are celebrated, recognised, and preserved for future generations.

In Dame Shirley’s own words:

“It is truly humbling to know that my music and story have inspired young talent. I am honoured to support the Black Welsh Music Awards and the diverse creatives emerging from Wales.”

As we continue to shine a light on the rich and diverse tapestry of Welsh music, we invite you to join us in celebrating not only the achievements of today’s talents but also the legacy of icons like Dame Shirley Bassey – a true inspiration and a beacon for generations to come.
