We are delighted to welcome Dr Les Johnson as a new Ambassador for the Black Welsh Music Awards.
Dr Les is an entrepreneur, academic, musician, composer, visual artist and cultural leader whose distinguished career spans design, media, cultural heritage, music and innovation.
He is the Founder and Chairman of the National Windrush Museum, an organisation dedicated to researching, documenting, exhibiting and preserving the history and legacy of the Windrush generations and their successors.
His academic and creative work reflects an extraordinary breadth of knowledge. His doctoral research explored jazz and reggae, rhetorical practice, musicality, sound system culture and sonicity. As a guitarist, bassist and keyboardist, he has created music for artworks, films and installations, co-produced music innovation conferences and delivered the University of the West Indies’ prestigious Bob Marley Lecture.
Throughout his work, Dr Les has championed the power of culture, creativity and community to drive social transformation. His vision connects art, identity and innovation, transforming memory into meaning and heritage into hope and belonging.
His commitment to music, cultural heritage, representation and creating opportunities for future generations strongly reflects the values and ambitions of the Black Welsh Music Awards.
