The launch of the Black Welsh Music Awards (BWMA) marks a transformative step in recognising and uplifting the contributions of Black artists in Wales. Designed to spotlight Wales’ vibrant Black music scene, the awards bring long-overdue visibility and celebration to artists across genres.
As the first dedicated platform of its kind in Wales, BWMA offers a space for musical excellence, cultural celebration, and creative legacy. With categories covering Afrobeats, jazz, hip-hop, reggae, gospel, R&B, and more, the awards reflect the rich tapestry of Black music in Wales.
Led by a collective of Black Welsh creatives and supported by cultural advocates, the BWMA is not only about awards – it is a movement for lasting change. The initiative seeks to inspire future generations, increase representation in the arts, and establish a more inclusive Welsh music industry.
As MOBO Awards prepares to mark its 30th anniversary next year – with only two Welsh acts ever receiving an award, including Cardiff grime artist Razkid – there is growing awareness that more needs to be done locally.
“We thought MOBO would filter down to Wales in the form of fringe events, exposure and raising of Welsh artists. That hasn’t really happened. So we’re growing our own organically,” said Shavanah Taj Iwobi, a key advocate for the awards.
“Our Wales-based MOBO musicians are making history and we’re inviting everyone to be part of it. Our time is now.”
The Black Welsh Music Awards are not just a celebration – they are a call to action for Wales to fully recognise and embrace its diverse musical heritage.
